The crumhorn consort Like recorders, viols and lutes, crumhorns were made in a range of sizes and therefore pitches, meant to be played together as a consort. The term "Krummhorn" (meaning bent horn or crump from the older English, meaning curve) was used in Germany from about 1300 on, apparently to describe a curved lip-reed instrument. Its characteristic curvature and wind cap may have evolved from the curved animal horn of bladder pipes and bagpipes. Because of the Crumhorn’s limited range, this instrument is often played together with a group of instruments that has several sizes and pitches. This group is known as a consort of crumhorns. Crumhorns are usually built in imitation of the vocal quartet with alto, soprano, bass, and tenor as a family.

Crumhorns are usually built in imitation of the vocal quartet with alto, soprano, bass, and tenor as a family.
Perhaps the crumhorn's ancestor was originally made with an attached cow horn like some early bagpipes, and when the all-wood crumhorn was developed, they kept the bend for sentimental reasons. Another theory is that the sound of a consort of crumhorns is so thick and rich that a player needs the end bent back up towards him so that he can hear what he's playing. Principal instruments made are the crumhorn and the cornamuse.
